Lucy Liu has entered her short-hair era with a fresh lob, revealed in the trailer for her upcoming drama Rosemead. The Charlie's Angels star now sports a sleek, side-part cut that falls just above her collarbone.
Rosemead premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June and will be released in theaters on December 5. The story centers on Irene (played by Liu), her son Joe (Lawrence Shou), and their struggle to navigate life after his schizophrenia diagnosis. The film is inspired by a 2017 Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong titled A dying mother's plan: Buy a gun. Kill her son.
This dramatic performance marks a shift for Liu, known for her lighter and action-driven roles in series such as Ally McBeal, Watching the Detectives, and Why Women Kill.
“As there was not a lot that was known about this family, the script had to be pieced together,” Liu told Variety. “In some ways, it’s a little bit of a thriller, because people know the final act and some of the details, and then the rest had to be kind of filled in, in order to understand the dynamic between Irene and her son.”
During the Tribeca premiere, Liu spoke with Parade about what drew her to the project and others that explore deep emotional and societal themes.
Lucy Liu’s new film Rosemead unveils both her shortest hairstyle in years and a bold shift toward darker, more emotionally charged storytelling.
