Brisbane Roar marked their return to the winners’ circle in the Isuzu UTE A-League with a commanding 3-0 win over Newcastle Jets at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
Defender Lucas Herrington, just 17 years old, opened the scoring in the 31st minute. Herrington broke free at a corner and headed in a precise delivery from Georgios Vrakas, giving Brisbane an early lead in front of a full house.
Shortly after halftime, Newcastle Jets had a golden opportunity to level the score. Forward Will Dobson attempted a lob over Brisbane keeper Dean Bouzanis but lacked the power and accuracy to convert.
With 20 minutes remaining, Brisbane thought they had doubled their lead when substitute Henry Hore scored from close range. However, the goal was disallowed due to an offside on Michael Ruhs earlier in the play, reprieving the Jets.
Eventually, captain Jay O’Shea sealed the win by converting a penalty after Jets defender Aleksandar Susnjar fouled Hore inside the box, making it 2-0.
“O’Shea duly thumped home the spot-kick to make it 2-0.”
