Karrueche Tran immersed herself in Hip-Hop culture to prepare for her latest role in Lifetime’s film Terry McMillan Presents: Preach, Pray, Love, which premiered on November 8. To bring authenticity to her performance, she studied Brooklyn rapper Lola Brooke, drawing inspiration from her distinctive style and energy.
Tran portrays Charlisa “Charlie” Jones, a platinum-selling rapper battling the scars of her past. The actress admitted that this role demanded a complete transformation and pushed her outside her comfort zone.
“I’m not musically inclined in any way,”
she told Celeb Secrets, explaining that she studied Lola Brooke, practiced intensely, and committed to mastering the part.
“It was a great challenge. I studied a rapper named Lola Brooke, I prepared myself, and I did it. I think I did a pretty decent job!”
The film follows Charlie after her release from prison as she begins community service under Pastor Kyrus Owens, portrayed by Mark J.P. Their relationship becomes the emotional centerpiece, exploring the tension between Charlie’s street roots and the pastor’s spiritual guidance.
The ensemble cast includes Tobias Truvillion, B. Simone, Reginae Carter, and Da Brat. The film was directed by acclaimed author and filmmaker Terry McMillan, known for Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
“I learned that I can do anything I put my mind to,”
Tran reflected on her growth during filming.
“I was anxious because I wanted to do the character justice — but once I focused, I realized you can do anything when you really go for it.”
Through discipline and dedication, Karrueche Tran reshaped her performance skills, channeling Lola Brooke’s energy to elevate her portrayal of a strong but wounded artist facing redemption.
