Whisky On The Hill made up for missing out on the Melbourne Cup by winning the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) and claiming a $200,000 bonus. This victory brought satisfaction to his trainer, Glen Thompson, and the owners.
Despite wintry conditions, Whisky On The Hill, ridden by jockey Damian Lane, powered past Etna Rosso to secure the win. Japanese contender Golden Snap challenged strongly in the straight but finished third.
The Queen Elizabeth Stakes serves as a consolation race for stayers unable to compete in the nation-stopping Melbourne Cup. Out of 12 starters, six were eligible for the $200,000 victory bonus available to Cup-nominated stayers.
“Very satisfying to get this result. He hasn’t had a lot go his way all prep,” Glen Thompson said. “He’s been racing really well and I was very concerned when the rain came.”
