Album Review: Nervous Twitch - The Day Job Gets in the Way

Leeds-based band Nervous Twitch released their latest album, The Day Job Gets in the Way, following their 2022 album Some People Never Change. It was a pleasant surprise to be asked by singer Erin to review this new record.

From the first listen, it’s evident that Nervous Twitch maintain their talent for turning everyday frustrations into joyful rebellion. While their previous album displayed a “less-angry riot grrrl” vibe, this new release feels more relaxed and playful, yet equally impactful.

If one were to compare, The Day Job Gets in the Way shares some qualities with The Slits: quirky, raw punk with a strong DIY spirit. However, Nervous Twitch have developed a unique sound that is scrappy yet melodic and unpolished but immediately catchy.

The production exudes a charmingly rough, almost vinyl-like quality, reminiscent of discovering a gem in a second-hand record store. Erin’s vocals blend sweetly with the wiry guitars and energetic rhythm section, adding warmth even to the sharper lyrics.

“Don’t be fooled by that sweetness, though.”

This album strikes a balance between rough edges and melodic hooks, making it an irresistible listen.

Summary: Nervous Twitch’s latest album captures everyday frustrations with playful punk energy, blending raw production and catchy melodies for a distinct, infectious sound.
