FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY | Kentucky Braces for Incoming Winter Weather Blast

Kentucky Braces for Incoming Winter Weather Blast

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for far southeastern Kentucky as the region prepares for snow showers and dangerously cold wind chills to begin the work week.

Cold Front and Temperature Drop

This morning, scattered rain showers and a few stronger storms are possible as a cold front moves across the state. Winds will strengthen, and temperatures will rapidly fall into the 30s from northwest to southeast by afternoon. By early evening, remaining rain showers will turn to a mix of rain and snow as colder air arrives behind the front.

Overnight Conditions

Overnight, snow showers and light flurries will mainly affect central and eastern Kentucky. The snow is expected to collect mostly on grassy and elevated surfaces. As temperatures dip into the 20s, icy patches may form on bridges and overpasses.

Wind Chill and Early Week Outlook

Winds will intensify, making it feel much colder, with wind chills dropping into the teens by Monday morning. A developing low-pressure system will bring widespread snow showers and occasional snow squalls through Monday. Some areas could experience an uncommon phenomenon known as thundersnow.

Most locations will see light snow accumulation, but heavier bursts could briefly reduce visibility and make roads slippery.

Daytime highs will hold near or below freezing, and strong winds will keep the air feeling like the upper teens to low 20s. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously in these dangerous conditions.

Author’s Summary

Snow showers, plunging temperatures, and fierce winds will grip Kentucky as a winter blast sweeps in, creating treacherous travel and frigid conditions across much of the state.
