A snow squall watch has been issued for Sarnia, Petrolia, and Lambton County. Environment Canada forecasted that snow squalls could occur from late Sunday night through Tuesday morning, with heavy lake-effect snow accumulating between 15 to 30 cm, and potentially more in some areas.
Residents are warned to prepare for rapidly changing and worsening travel conditions. A weather statement indicated that snowfall of two to five centimeters was likely on Sunday, continuing into the evening, making roads hazardous and visibility potentially dropping to near zero at times.
“Prepare for the possibility of quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” said Environment Canada.
Sgt. Ed Sanchuk of West Region OPP emphasized caution in a social media post:
“The snow is falling and so should your speed.”
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) urged drivers to adapt to the conditions, leave extra stopping time, increase following distance, and ensure vehicles are cleared of snow and ice before driving. Drivers are also advised to stay alert, patient, and keep headlights on even during the day, enhancing visibility.
“You want to be visible,” Sgt. Sanchuk said. “Arriving safely is what matters most.”
Environment Canada stated that lake-effect snow would affect Lambton County Sunday evening, with possible impacts near the eastern shore of Lake Huron on Monday morning. Squalls may extend toward Lake Erie as well.
