A Wet Winter Won't Dampen Plans for the Rideau Canal Skateway

The National Capital Commission (NCC) confirms it is fully ready to manage the warmer, wetter winter expected on the Rideau Canal Skateway.

Early Snowfall in Ottawa

Ottawa could receive between 5 and 15 cm of snow on Sunday, marking the season's first official snowfall. However, this snow may not last through the winter. Usually, Ottawa experiences its first snowfall in late October, but this year's late start could indicate a different seasonal pattern.

Winter Forecast and Climate Conditions

The Farmer’s Almanac 2025-2026 winter forecast predicts that southern Quebec, including Ottawa, will see increased precipitation but less snow overall. This suggests a wetter winter with rain and mixed precipitation reducing snowfall totals.

Environment Canada expects temperatures to be slightly above seasonal averages, though cold spells are forecast for December and early January. Winter weather variability is increasing in this region, presenting challenges for outdoor activities like Winterlude and the Rideau Canal Skateway.

NCC's Preparedness for Winter Challenges

“Every year, we work diligently under challenging conditions to produce enough high-quality ice that is suitable and safe for mass use,” said Maryam El-Akhrass, NCC spokesperson.

The NCC expressed pride in maintaining the skateway each season and readiness to adapt to unique weather conditions.

Author’s summary: Despite unpredictable warmer and wetter winter conditions, the NCC remains confident in maintaining safe and high-quality ice for the Rideau Canal Skateway each year.
