On Sunday, the Senate took a key step toward ending the government shutdown after moderate Democrats, including Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto from Nevada, agreed to move forward.
Both senators supported advancing the compromise legislation without a guaranteed extension of health care subsidies, a move that upset many members of their party who wanted to continue the fight.
The deal does not guarantee the continuation of ACA subsidies as Democrats have demanded for nearly six weeks. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) voted against moving the package forward, along with most of his Democratic colleagues.
"Nevadans had not sent her to Washington to ‘cave’ to Republicans," said Senator Jacky Rosen, reflecting tensions within the group.
While Senator Cortez Masto had often supported Republican-backed measures to end the shutdown, the two Nevada senators have previously expressed different views on this issue. However, the unprecedented costs of the longest shutdown in U.S. history proved too great to ignore.
Moderate Nevada senators broke with many Democrats to support advancing a bill aiming to end the government shutdown, despite the lack of guaranteed health care subsidy extensions.
