Environment Canada announced Saturday that strong wind warnings for North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii have extended to rainfall alerts for the North Coast region. The warnings, first issued Friday night, remain active through the weekend.
“An intensifying frontal system will impact the B.C. coast today and overnight into Sunday morning,” states Environment Canada.
Southeasterly winds of 70 to 90 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 110 km/h, are expected along exposed coastal areas. Gusts began Saturday morning and are likely to weaken by Sunday. Authorities caution that the storm could trigger temporary power outages, disrupt road travel, and affect ferry or air services.
DriveBC has also urged motorists in North Coast areas to drive carefully over the next few days due to slick roads and reduced visibility.
“Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Stay away from fallen power lines,” warns Environment Canada.
Rainfall warnings are in effect for Haida Gwaii and the North Coast, including Kitimat, Stewart, and Terrace. These regions are forecast to receive 50 to 85 millimetres of rain from Saturday through late Sunday.
Environment Canada warns of strong winds and heavy rain across coastal British Columbia through Sunday, advising residents to brace for potential power and travel disruptions.
