Avalanche Journal: Fans aren’t only ones excited to meet Rebecca Yarros at ‘Fourth Wing’ night

Avalanche Journal: Excitement Builds for “Fourth Wing” Night

Brock Nelson first encountered Violet Sorrengail while browsing a bookstore in Toronto with former New York Islanders teammate Matt Martin. Around the same time, Scott Wedgewood became captivated by the world-building and dragon-riding romantasy of “Fourth Wing” during a drive from Michigan to Denver.

More than 2,500 fans purchased special tickets for the “Fourth Wing” night held Thursday at Ball Arena, celebrating Rebecca Yarros’ debut novel in the “Empyrean” series. Alongside the fans, locals and players eagerly anticipate the event and the chance to meet Yarros, a Colorado Springs resident and hockey mom.

“I’m pumped for that night, the jersey, having Rebecca there,” said Brock Nelson. “I’m hoping I get to meet her. It’s cool to have that connection now. Last year, I remember somebody was like, ‘Hey, did you see the author of ‘Fourth Wing’ was at one of your games?’ I had no idea. Then I saw that she’s a huge fan. Fast forward to now with ‘Fourth Wing’ night, and it’s pretty cool.”

The Yarros family are avid Avalanche supporters, although Rebecca’s husband is from the East Coast and a lifelong Rangers fan. They attended a game in Denver last season, during which the topic arose of her potentially throwing out the first pitch at Fenway Park.

“Fourth Wing” night represents not only a celebration of a popular novel but also a unique connection between hockey culture and literary fandom.
