Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith brought their BAFTA-winning world to the stage last night, opening Inside No. 9: Stage/Fright in Oxford to a standing ovation. True to form, the show is mischievous, macabre, and very funny, filled with sudden shocks that had the audience shrieking with laughter.
The opening piece is a cheeky love letter—and a gentle warning—to theatre etiquette, making even experienced theatregoers reconsider rustling sweet wrappers or checking their phones during a performance. It sets a sharp, witty, and edgy tone for the evening.
Stage/Fright is a black comedy–horror play that mixes new material with sly nods to beloved TV episodes. Fans of the show will appreciate a special moment inspired by “Bernie Clifton’s Dressing Room,” though no spoilers are given.
The second story intensifies the mood, using backstage video to guide the audience through an eerie, empty theatre. Each creak and shadowy corridor builds suspense and heightens tension.
One of the show's unique features is a different surprise guest each night. Oxford's opening included Will Young, who joined the cast in pyjamas and a dressing gown, humorously trying—and failing—to keep a straight face as Pemberton and Shearsmith playfully surrounded him. Young returned the favor with a cheeky story that nearly made the pair laugh out loud on stage.
“Stage/Fright is mischievous, macabre, and very, very funny, peppered with jumpy little shocks that had the audience shrieking between laughs.”
“A cheeky love letter (and a gentle threat!) to theatre etiquette that’ll make even the most seasoned theatregoer think twice about rustling a sweet wrapper or checking a phone mid-show.”
Author’s summary: Inside No. 9: Stage/Fright delivers a sharp and entertaining blend of black comedy and horror, impressing audiences with its wit, surprise guests, and spine-tingling atmosphere.
