Hoorn Alderman Resigns Over Asylum Seeker Crisis Shelter Plans
VVD politician Marjon van der Ven has resigned from her role as an alderman in the coalition leading the local government in Hoorn due to disagreements over plans to house asylum seekers in an emergency shelter.
Van der Ven stated that the City Council had already rejected the proposal for the Johannes Poststraat in September, and it was improper for the aldermen to push forward with the plans for housing 50 people without resubmitting the decision to the City Council.
She finds it reprehensible that they did not resubmit that decision to the City Council.
Despite the initial rejection, the coalition announced the establishment of a temporary emergency shelter for a maximum of 50 asylum seekers in a former school building on Johannes Poststraat.
Initially, the location was meant to hold 100 people, but the number was reduced due to insufficient support.
