Cold Weather and Government Shutdown Put Pressure on Local Food Pantries

Food pantries and non-profits are facing increased pressure due to cold weather, new SNAP cuts, and the government shutdown.

Dream Center Bismarck, a nonprofit providing food and essentials to families in need, is experiencing higher numbers earlier this year.

“It’s just easier to walk in here and get a meal than to go over to social services and try to apply for some card that you may or may not get,”

said Robert Ereth, a food pantry client. The pantry saw an estimated 15% increase compared to last year and expects November to be tougher.

According to the pantry,

“We’re seeing a lot of people who are scared of what’s coming. You know, they’re hearing about government shutdowns, and you know that type of thing. So there’s a bit of panic buying, if you will.”
