Construction crews are now placing concrete on the bridge deck for the new westbound structure as part of the Brooks Bridge replacement project on Okaloosa Island.
Once placed, the concrete will undergo a seven-day “wet cure” hydration process to reach maximum strength and durability. This method involves spraying water lightly over the surface and laying a wet, saturated fabric on top to keep it consistently moist.
The $171-million project, overseen by the Florida Department of Transportation, includes constructing two new, parallel bridge structures that will increase capacity to six travel lanes, replacing the current four-lane bridge that opened in 1966.
