UVA Faculty Rejects Trump Administration's Compact for Academic Excellence

The Trump administration requested that nine universities, including the University of Virginia, sign an agreement in exchange for preferential access to federal funding by October 20th.

UVA's student government, along with six other schools, opposed the deal. According to Matthew Hedstrom, Associate Professor of American Studies and Religious Studies at UVA, faculty members also expressed widespread opposition.

Faculty famously like to disagree, but not on this. I have never seen such unanimity among my colleagues.

The compact would bar schools from considering race, ethnicity, or gender in admissions and would require SAT or ACT scores.
