Alex Bregman, the Red Sox third baseman, has opted out of his contract and become a free agent after a bounce-back season, hitting .273 with 18 home runs.
Despite a second-half slump and a quad injury, the 31-year-old is expected to have suitors in free agency, represented by his agent Scott Boras.
Bregman's decision to opt out comes after signing a 3-year, $120 million contract in February, which led to controversy and the trade of All-Star Rafael Devers to San Francisco.
He was coming off a season where he hit just .260.
