Concerns over Inhumane Treatment during Deportations

A Nigerian man shared his experience of being deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in September.

He described being woken up in the middle of the night, along with other detainees, and having shackles placed on their hands and feet.

“It was just like a kidnapping,”

said the Nigerian man, who is part of a federal lawsuit, in an interview with The Associated Press from a detainment camp in Ghana.

The officers allegedly refused to allow them to speak to their attorney and instead used full-body restraint suits, known as the WRAP, which is also referred to as “the burrito” or “the bag”.

The men were then loaded onto a plane for a 16-hour flight to West Africa, despite none of them being from Ghana.

This use of full-body restraints by ICE has raised concerns over inhumane treatment.
