Poultry growers: Have you checked your water lines lately? - High Plains Journal

Poultry Water Quality and Biofilm Formation

Poultry growers should check their water lines to ensure good water quality, as it can impact microbial populations and lead to biofilm buildup.

According to a new study, water quality affects the kind of microbial populations in poultry drinking water lines, potentially harboring pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella.

“If you have good water quality, that doesn’t mean you don’t want to understand what’s in your water lines and in the biofilm,”

said Tomi Obe, an assistant professor of poultry science. Biofilm is a thin, slimy layer made up of various substances that serve as a cocoon for microscopic bacteria, forming regardless of water quality.

Author's summary: Poultry water quality affects microbial populations and biofilm formation.
