Several local cities, including San Diego, Imperial Beach, and Chula Vista, have enacted Tenant Protection Ordinances (TPOs) in addition to California's already strict tenant protections.
However, Oceanside City Councilmember Rick Robinson recently reversed his vote on a proposed TPO, stating that it would not keep people in their homes. He cited the concerns of small "mom-and-pop" landlords in! his community, concluding that additional local rules and red tape do not solve the real problem.
What we did is not going to keep people in their homes.
National research now supports Robinson's decision, revealing the costly consequences of these regulations for renters.
Author's summary: TPOs are ineffective in protecting tenants.
