A new structure has been built in King Harbor to house white sea bass, with 1,418 tagged fish set to arrive in November.
The complex measures 14 feet long by 7 feet wide, with a six-foot deep fiberglass pen in the middle, and is one of 10 such pens along the Southern California Coast, overseen by Hubbs Sea World Research Institute.
“It’s essentially like a big bathtub,”
said Clark McNulty, co-director of the $71,000 Redondo Beach project, which was paid for by the city. The young fish are equipped with a scannable numerical code, embedded in a small chip inserted under their cheekbone, revealing their birthplace, in this case a hatchery in Carlsbad.
Security fencing is the last piece to be installed, with completion expected next week.
