Whitehorse city council has voted unanimously for the first reading of a new zoning bylaw, which aims to make it easier to build more housing by eliminating parking requirements in certain areas.
According to senior city planner Darcy McCord, the main goal of the project is
“to make it easier for people to build more housing”.
The draft bylaw reduces parking requirements in the downtown and urban centres, especially near transit routes where shared and active transportation is a viable option, aligning with the Official Community Plan adopted in 2023.
Key areas of the draft bylaw, including current and future parking requirements, have been discussed by councillors, staff, and the public, with some points of contention remaining.
