Student Fostering: A Solution for Overcrowded Animal Shelters

Animal shelters in Canada are struggling to cope with the increasing number of animals in need, with over 300,000 dogs and cats entering shelters every year.

Only 21 per cent of Canadian Humane Societies' funding comes from the government, leaving shelters to rely heavily on community support.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue, with a 63 per cent increase in surrendered and abandoned animals in local shelters from 2021 to 2022.

Students might be the perfect remedy to stop the overflow.

This highlights the need for alternative solutions, such as student fostering, to help bridge the gap between shelters and abandoned animals.

Author's summary: Students can help overcrowded animal shelters.
