The City of Cape Town is introducing an additional 1,000 body-worn cameras for its law enforcement officers.
This move follows the initial rollout of 1,250 bodycams two years ago. Bodycams are wearable recording systems used globally by police and law enforcement agencies.
A standard operating procedure has been developed, outlining training requirements and guiding staff on the use of bodycams. Footage is stored securely using a digital evidence management solution, accessible only to authorized personnel.
When footage is released for legal or other purposes, it is done to preserve the chain of custody, notes the city.
Bodycams are used to record audio, video, or photographic evidence.
