In July, Nassau County police officer Ian Fogarty was visiting Cupsogue Beach County Park in Westhampton Beach with his wife, Kirsten, and their three children when he noticed several teenagers swimming offshore. Two of them, both 16, became trapped in a powerful current nearly 100 yards from the coast.
With only a boogie board, the off-duty officer swam toward the teens and guided them safely back to shore. The rescue took place on July 16 and drew praise from the community for Fogarty’s quick thinking and courage.
“It just looked like it was something that could go wrong very quickly,” recalled Fogarty, 38.
For his brave actions, the Nassau County Legislature honored Fogarty with its September “Top Cop” award, citing his selfless valor and commitment to public safety.
Fogarty, a resident of Sayville, was accompanied that day by his wife, Kirsten, and their children Killian, Sawyer, and Briggs. The family expressed pride in his instinctive decision to act without hesitation.
