Those wishing to honor the sacrifice of New Zealanders who fought for their nation’s freedom in the First World War are invited to gather on Armistice Day. The Howick Returned and Services Association (RSA) will hold a ceremony at the cenotaph on Stockade Hill next Tuesday.
Howick RSA president Barry Dreyer welcomes both association members and the public to attend. Participants are asked to assemble at 10:45 a.m., with the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. with the playing of the Last Post.
“November 11 is Armistice Day, the day of remembrance for those killed and those damaged from World War I,” Dreyer says.
The ceremony will include a short address, the laying of wreaths, bugle calls, and the Ode of Remembrance. Local schools will also take part in the event.
Following the ceremony, RSA members and guests are invited to refreshments and lunch at the Apothecary Café on Picton Street, with reserved seating provided. Attendance at the lunch is at individual expense.
“We look forward to seeing you there for this important commemoration,” Dreyer says.
Armistice Day is marked by a minute of silence at 11 minutes past 11 o’clock on November 11, commemorating the 1918 signing of the armistice that ended World War I.
Summary: Howick RSA invites the community to honor World War I sacrifices with a solemn ceremony and gathering, stressing the enduring importance of Armistice Day remembrance.
