A bus suffered catastrophic damage after colliding with a low bridge on Weston Street in Bolton this evening, tearing the entire roof off and scattering debris across the road.

The incident took place around 7:45 p.m. when a Bee Network bus operated by Go North West struck the bridge, which stands 3.7 meters high and is clearly marked with a “low bridge” warning. The bridge is located in the Burnden area, south of Bolton town centre.

Fortunately, there were no passengers aboard, and the driver escaped without severe injuries. The bus was out of service and heading back to the depot at the time of the crash, according to Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

“At around 7.45pm tonight, an out of service bus collided with a low bridge on Weston Street in Bolton, causing extensive damage to the vehicle’s roof,” said a TfGM spokesperson. “The bus, operated by Go North West, was being driven back to the depot at the time of the incident, was not in service and had no passengers on board.”

Police quickly arrived on the scene, closing the road to remove the damaged vehicle and clear the area. Photos from the site captured the roof lying on the roadway beside the bus.
